Caught Lacking”

Caught lacking, caught weaponless: you’re right that the unarmed are the focus. But they’re caught lacking in a second sense too, lacking a language that isn’t borrowed, one where they can speak for themselves instead of being spoken for by the news, which narrates in the passive who “was caught.” The only armament left to the weaponless is the one the poem ends on: the steppe “did not agree.” Non-consent is the last form of disarmament that still resists. That’s where the title’s logic leads, and it’s what the closing poem of the book means when it calls it noble to be caught unarmed.
